Message About School Safety

February 28, 2018

Dear Spackenkill Community,

It was reported today in the Poughkeepsie Journal that the Poughkeepsie City School District is closed today as a result of a perceived threat. A week ago, the Dover Schools closed as a result of a threat that was made and later determined as not credible. I am personally aware of the threat made at Poughkeepsie City School District, as information was shared with me last night. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department shared information. This threat was specific to their district.

In the coming days you will likely hear more rumors and reports. Please be aware that the district and our School Resource Officer investigate any level of threat. If we deem a threat to be credible we will inform you. You did not hear from me on this Poughkeepsie City School District incident because I discussed it last night with our SRO and we agreed that it did not apply to us. However, since some parents called, I felt it was necessary to send you this update.

Our school district is committed to the following pledge, “Never here, not at Spack.” We are following 5 principles of school safety and meeting with our district safety team, which includes two police officers, a security expert, and a first responder. We need to “harden” some of our protocols and other safety measures. Meanwhile, we continue to ask for the help of all students, families, and staff to implement the following 5-point principles of school safety:

1.     Be an upstander, not a bystander.

2.     See something, say something.

3.     Use social media responsibly.

4.     Engage families to seek counseling and mental health services, where appropriate.

5.     Work with the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and our SRO, as needed.

Please call your building principal if you have any concerns about your child or any problem that you observe.

Sincerely,

Mark Villanti
Dr. Mark Villanti
Superintendent of Schools
